TRASLATIO ROUTE - SPIRITUAL VARIANT OF THE WAY OF SAINT JAMES

[ TRASLATIO ROUTE BY LA BARCA DEL PEREGRINO ® ]

The Traslatio Route or The Mar de Arousa and Río Ulla Route

   La Barca del Peregrino ®

A unique experience with history.

Traslatio… Latin term that refers to the legendary Translation by sea of the remains of the Apostle James the Greater, who was martyred and beheaded by order of Herod Agrippa, after years preaching in Hispania, in the year 44.

The story goes that the Stone Boat transported the body of the Apostle James guided by his favorite disciples Anastasio and Teodoro, on a miraculous journey that lasted 7 days from Haifa (Palestine) to Iria Flavia (Padrón). Traslatio Route

What is the Traslatio of the Camino de Santiago?

The TRASLATIO is part of a stage in the Spiritual Variant the Portuguese way of Saint James. In our remembrance we started from the fishing town of Vilanova de Arousa. The 28 kilometer route crosses the Arosa Estuary and goes up the Ulla River to Pontecesures, an hour’s journey full of history and beauty. A few minutes after our departure from Vilanova de Arousa we will be able to see the “Bateas”, floating wooden platforms where mussels are grown and we will explain the importance of this mollusk. Shortly after we will find Cortegada, an island that belongs to the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia, which is home to the largest laurel forest in Europe. Its location at the mouth of the river divides the Ría de Arosa and the Ulla River.

Discover the art of mussel farming

Galicia has nearly 1,200 kilometers of coastline, with the Ría de Arousa being one of the largest in this community with more than 200 kilometers of surface.

The geographical characteristics of the Ría de Arousa, located between A Coruña and Pontevedra, mean that it has great marine wealth.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations considers the Galician Rías one of the most important phytoplankton deposits and one of the areas with the highest mussel production in the world.

It has about 20 mussel polygons, 2,319 rafts, 68% of all existing rafts in the Galician Rías.

West Towers, in Catoira

The West Towers are the ruins of a castle whose function was to protect Santiago de Compostela from invasion attempts, which is remembered every year with the celebration of the Viking Romany of Catoira.

In the 9th and 10th centuries, the fortress was a bastion, “the key and seal of Galicia”, its objective preventing the passage of ships from the Arousa estuary to the Ulla river.

Nature in its purest form

The Ría de Arousa is one of the richest in the world, with a great diversity of fish, crustaceans and shellfish. Throughout the O Salnés region there is a wide variety of Albariño wines with their own Rías Baixas designation of origin.

You will be able to discover unique corners that will make you rediscover them with more time. Vilanova de Arousa, Cambados, Vilagarcía de Arousa, Sanxenxo, O Grove, A Illa de Arousa and Catoira, with the remains of the Torres do Oeste, built to defend against Viking attacks, will be places that you cannot miss.

Centenary cruises

A wonderful route full of history where we will see the only maritime river Via Crucis formed by 12 cruises (out of a total of 17), which are located at the mouth of the Ría de Arousa and the banks of the Ulla River.

Most were built in 1960 by Alfonso San Martin Abelleira. We highlight the beauty of “El Calvario”, the name given to the three cruise ships located in Punta Patiño, which were built in memory of Santiago Apóstol and his two disciples.
